Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People wrote, “Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have–you. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.”
Better Direct has taken this philosophy to heart through the leadership of the Owner, Mark Evans. Mark has always worked out in the back of the building doing some physical/cardio training and a mix of boxing and exercise. The philosophy we have of continuous improvement fits Covey’s design for “Sharpening the Saw” perfectly.
We have invested in a wellness director, who is a former professional boxing trainer, to raise the health and activity level for all the employees at Better Direct. We have noticed that most people want to spend time exercising but, don’t make it a priority for themselves. They also enjoy the idea and camaraderie of exercising as a team. Each day we work out for 60 minutes of continuous exercise to improve our lives and well-being.
How does this matter to a small business? It promotes a state of physical well-being and self-renewal that allows us to achieve higher goals in work and life. Together we learn the value of beneficial eating, exercising, and resting. Social/emotional is covered through the connections we make here that allow us to work more efficiently as a team and make meaningful connections. Mentally, we challenge everyone at Better Direct to improve their knowledge of their job through education and growth in technology certifications in the many new companies we choose to sell their products.
I can speak with confidence about having all these areas of life in balance and the importance and benefits of developing a successful bright future through a philosophy of Continuous improvement. Better Direct makes this possible for our valued employees to excel.
